Newcomers

Hamlin Charter Academy offers a  a specialized program designed to support students who are new to the United States and are learning English as an additional language1. The program is called Newcomers' Class.  Here’s what parents should know about it:

    • Who Are Our Newcomers?: Newcomers are students who have recently arrived in the U.S. and bring diverse situations, circumstances, and assets1.
    • Support for Newcomers: The class helps newcomers adapt to U.S. schools, society, and culture1. It provides a safe and welcoming environment for these students to learn English and adjust to their new surroundings2.
    • Instructional Approach: The class focuses on teaching English language skills, while also helping students access content in other subject areas3. It uses a variety of teaching strategies, including visuals, hands-on activities, and partner work4.
    • Building Relationships: The class also emphasizes building relationships with parents and families, recognizing that they are crucial partners in the students’ academic achievement2.
    • Cultural Inclusivity: The class celebrates the languages and cultures of the students, making them feel valued and included2.

The class is being taught by two teachers: one is in charge of instructing a group of newcomers who need extra support to develop their oral language skills while the other teacher is in charge of supporting students using Rosetta Stone on an iPad or Chromebooks.

Remember, the goal of the Newcomers Class is to help students become proficient in English and succeed academically. As a parent, your involvement and support can make a significant difference in your child’s learning journey.

Rosetta Stone Is Getting A Refresh! » NCW Libraries %

Rosetta Stone is a language learning program that can significantly aid in improving English language proficiency among elementary students who are new to the country. Here’s how it works:

    • Immersive Environment: Rosetta Stone uses a structured Dynamic Immersion method that mirrors how our brains first acquire language1. Students learn intuitively through real-world images and audio from native speakers1. There are no instructions or translations. Instead, students learn through context and reasoning, assigning meaning to what they see and hear.
    • Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening Practice: Rosetta Stone engages students in all four domains of language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking1. Throughout each unit, students learn pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary while practicing each of these domains1. The varied practice in Rosetta Stone helps students develop proficiency in their target language as they progress1.
    • TruAccent Speech Recognition: Rosetta Stone’s TruAccent speech recognition uses data from millions of native speakers to accurately analyze the nuances of their pronunciation1. When students complete speaking activities in Rosetta Stone, their voice is compared to these native speakers for immediate feedback on how well they spoke each word or phrase1.
    • Placement Guides: Rosetta Stone for Schools has developed placement guides for English language learners to get them started quickly in the right Rosetta Stone unit2. We recommend that all K-5 students start in Unit 1 regardless of proficiency test scores2.
    • ELL Teacher Resources: Rosetta Stone for Schools Placement Guides are just one of the many resources that are available for ELL teachers2.
    • Remember, the goal of using Rosetta Stone is to help students become proficient in English and succeed academically. As a parent, your involvement and support can make a significant difference in your child’s learning journey.
