Every student has the right to a quality education. The Williams Complaint Procedures help ensure that all students have:
- Up-to-date textbooks and instructional materials to use at school and at home, when needed
- Safe, clean, and well-maintained school facilities
- Qualified teachers who are properly assigned to teach their classes
The Williams Complaint Procedures were created after a California court case that led to new laws protecting students' rights. These laws help make sure that all public schools provide the basic resources students need to learn and succeed.
In 2023, California updated these laws through Assembly Bill (AB) 1078. The updated law provides clearer guidelines for the selection and use of textbooks, instructional materials, library books, and other educational resources. It also gives the state additional authority to ensure that schools follow these requirements.
If you believe your child does not have the instructional materials they need, is learning in an unsafe or poorly maintained classroom, or has not been assigned an appropriately qualified teacher, you have the right to file a Williams Complaint. Complaints may be submitted to the school principal using the District's Williams Uniform Complaint Procedures.
