Here are some suggested questions to answer after you watch the mini-lesson:
1. How do earthquakes happen?
2. What did this lesson make you curious about? What other questions do you have about earthquakes?
Bonus Activity: Can you figure out ways to keep a building from falling down in an earthquake? Build a tower out of paper. You can fold, twist, or tear the paper — whatever you need to make it stand tall. Place your tower on a plate and shake it back and forth. Does your tower fall? If it does, what could you do to help it stay up? Try again and see if it stays upright this time!

Why might an author want to include a photograph of a historical event? If an author wanted to reinforce the order in which several events occurred, what might be a good way to organize that for the reader?
The time line is called “From Roads to Highways.” This tells me that the time line will show some events related to the change from roads to highways.
The first event on the time line is: “1908: Model Ts are mass produced.”
The same event described in paragraph 3.
Draw a line from the time line event to the sentence in paragraph 3.
Since this is the first event on the time line, the author might think it’s the first important event that led to roads changing to highways.
Use the example to help you complete the rest of the chart.

The first event described in the text is the appearance of the first automobiles in the 1890s.
Underline that in the text and write it in the Events column.
In the next paragraph, they say there were few paved roads in those days. Write that down in the Details column.

Ms. Portugal is saving money toward purchasing a rug for the classroom that costs $325. She started this month with $70 in her savings account. She then saved $140 this month from her pay for working a second job. PTA agreed to pay $60 toward the cost of the rug. Write two expressions that are equal to the remaining amount that Ms. Portugal must save.
Remember: Expressions do not include equal signs. You are giving me two ways that will give me the amount I still need in order to purchase a rug.
Note: Room 27 does need a rug. :)
